Make sure your contractor does not underestimate the project.. If a contractor does not have the expertise of submitting a proper bid, costs may rise. If this happens the contractor may charge more or cut corners.

-Avoid contractors who stretch themselves too thin. Some contractors may have too many projects on their plate and not enough workers to follow through. This can lead to long delays and sometimes it leads to shoddy work.

-Check on a contractor’s experience. Just because someone lists kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling on his business card and calls himself a contractor doesn’t mean it’s true. Many don’t have the experience and know how to successfully complete a job, on time and to your liking. Do your homework and check references and see examples.

-Avoid “wheelers and dealers.” Many contractors can take your money, but don’t have enough financial responsibility to complete the job. And if they do, they may not be here tomorrow to resolve any future problems with their work.

-Do not accept one time only offers. The bid a contractor offers you should not be a one-time only low price offer. A job proposal should have a reasonable time limit for you to accept the offer.
